Sept 2016 – President’s Message

It’s Labor Day already? Where did the summer go? Even though it was a good one, I’m ready for the cooler temperatures and warmer colors of fall. Years later, I still relate this time of year to going back to school. It’s no surprise then that our agenda in September is heavily focused on students.

Our chapter’s affiliation with Morgan State University affords us the opportunity to live vicariously through the experience of the new IISE student chapter leadership team as they learn the ropes of their new roles. We also get to revel in the award of the first ever IISE National Capital Chapter Morgan State University Book Scholarship. The Book Scholarship, which we hope will become an annual event, is the result of almost a years’ worth of planning from our Student Affairs Director, Theo Nehemias. I congratulate both the winner of scholarship, Gabriel Ezimorah, and Theo for their efforts.

To continue our focus on professional development, we have a fantastic opportunity this month with the Chair of Systems Engineering and Operations Research at George Mason University. Dr. Ariela Sofer has graciously invited us to her campus, where she will share her work using IE techniques to improve medical diagnoses.

I hope you can join us this month at one of the many events on the chapter calendar. We’ll be back at District ChopHouse for happy hour, out at GMU for Dr. Sofer’s talk, then west to Front Royal for the Virginia Inland Port Tour. Speaking for the whole chapter leadership team, I hope you’ll join one of our upcoming events.

Cheers,
Sean
