March 2011 – President Message

Hello Industrial Engineers and Friends of Industrial Engineers,

Welcome to our March newsletter. This is a great time for our chapter.

Board member Joyce Hadley was elected as IIE’s Region 2 Vice President. As such she will represent all the Senior and Student Chapters within regions 2 at IIE Headquarter and at Board of Trustee meetings. Joyce will do a great job representing IIE especially within the Baltimore and DC areas. She has work to support Mike McGee the outgoing Region 2 RVP for the past year.

Past National Capital Board Member and Current (not so) Immediate Past President of our chapter, Gary Orr has been appointed to replace Deb Laudenslager as Technical Vice President. Deb defeated Gary for Senior Vice President Technical Networking. However, Deb who is a Manufacturing Manager at Hershey REESE’S Plant and provides samples at our annual conference was a current Technical Vice President. Garry is replacing Deb in this capacity through the remainder of her term. I know both Garry and Deb will do a great job in their respective capacitates.

Now for the big news! The National Capital Chapter has again earned the top level of Gold for the program/calendar year of 2010. Congratulation to all our Board Executives and Directors. And congratulation to all our membership. The National Capital Chapter works hard and takes its responsibilities very seriously. We strive to bring you the best support, to be innovative in our thinking and approach, and to bring you exciting professional and technical networking opportunities as well as presentations.

One of our board members, Director Bruce Petro is at home recovery from double by-pass surgery. He seems to be doing well, except for the fact that he missed judging at his favorite high school science fair. Bruce supports your chapter in multiple roles, especially in organizing our science fair coverage and obtaining excellent books for those who we judge as the best. In addition, Bruce is our key program and event coordinator. Bruce is retired from the FAA. He is also one of our resident professional engineers. Bruce provides one-on-one guidance and training material for those interested in obtaining their professional engineering certificate. Bruce and I also provide group or one-on-one guidance and material for those looking to obtain a government job. In Bruce’s spare time, he is a volunteer police officer, motorcycle policeman and maritime police. As Bruce remains at home and recovers, our best goes out to Bruce’s wife, Karen!

Finally, remember Reno. Our IIE Annual Conference will take place at the Grand Sierra Resort Hotel from May 21st through May 25th in Reno, Nevada. Early bird registration rate are effective now through April 1, 2011. I will be there and I hope you plan to attend. Find everything about the conference at

Until next month,
Russell Wooten
President IIE National Capital Chapter
