February 2010 – President Message

Dear Industrial Engineers and Friends of Industrial Engineers,

Welcome to our February 2010 newsletter, the official “Snow” Edition. The Washington DC area has seen two major snow falls this winter in which over 4 feet of snow has fallen. This is more snow than I saw during my winter in the Primorsky Krai Region of Russia, not that far from Siberia!

But I got to work from home today and that was great.

The month of February starts our period of Science Fairs. The first of which is the Future Cities Competition. This year as in the past, the National Capital Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers is partnering with our parent headquarters. They are supply the money and we are supplying the talent. This talent consists of judges for the 2010 Future Cities Special Awards. The Future City Competition is part of National Engineers Week.

Please refer to the articles within this newsletter to learn more about National Engineers Week Activities, Future Cities Competition and all our Science Fairs throughout this Spring. (If the snow actually stops.)

Finally, if anyone is reading this letter and is from the Baltimore area, feel free to drop me an email if they are either interested in trying to revitalize the Baltimore Chapter, or if they wish to move their membership to the DC chapter. To do the later, they will have to work or live within 50 miles from Tysons Corner. As far as helping Baltimore get back on its feet, our chapter has offered to help, by providing some assistance to include our tools, goodwill, and a student program. But so far we have not identified anyone to take this lead.

Our chapter wants the Baltimore Chapter to succeed and continue. It takes a lot of work to keep a chapter moving forward, but I believe in the concepts and value added solutions of industrial engineering.
