Report: Research Directions into the Future – Thoughts and Perspectives from an NSF Program Director

On October 1, as a result of the partial shutdown of the federal government, the IIE National Capital Chapter cancelled the “Research Directions into the Future: Thoughts and Perspectives from an NSF Program Director” presentation scheduled for October 2. The evening’s speaker, Dr. Sheldon Jacobson, was unable to speak as planned because of his association with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and rules governing the work of federal employees during the shutdown. Fortunately, the method used to collect registrations allowed the chapter to promptly contact all registrants and refund their meeting registration fee.

The meeting Chairperson, Neal Schmeidler, wishes to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and expresses his appreciation to the cosponsoring organizations and their members who spent precious time and did an awesome job to help organize and advertise the event. The cosponsoring organizations were: Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, Washington DC Chapter (WINFORMS); International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter; and, Washington Academy of Sciences.
