Report on the Oktoberfest Celebration

On October 23, those responding to the Chapter’s announcement about the Oktoberfest at Blob’s Park Bavarian Bier Garten ( in Jessup, Maryland had a grand time. The celebration drew a packed house of patrons ranging in age from infant to 85+ years. The bartenders were continuously filling pitchers from the draft beer spouts and those tending the buffet line were challenged with keeping the delicious German offerings filled…brats, kraut, red cabbage, potatoes, etc.

Squeezbox ( provided a fantastic show…great vocals, great dance selections, easy-to-dance-to music…(and lest you have doubts, Elvis made an appearance and sang “Wooden Heart”). Anyone who likes to listen to and/or dance to polkas, waltzes, line dancing, two-steps, the “chicken dance”, and other types of music missed a great evening of fun.

During the course of the evening, the dance club, the Alt Washingtonia Schupplaters (, entertained the crowd with authentic Bavarian schupplater (shoe slapping) dances, songs, customs and costumes through two separate performances. Yodelers demonstrated the beautiful melodies and intricate harmonies of the folksongs from villages in the mountains. Alphorns provided the unusual tones and tunes so characteristic of the mountainous areas of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
