Report: NATS Sell Out, Shut Out by Phils at August 20 Chapter Ballgame Outing

At the second of this year’s two IIE National Capital Chapter Scholarship fundraisers for the Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship, the Nationals lost to the Phils 5-0 on Saturday night August 20. On a warm clear night in SE Washington DC, the Phils got hot while the NATS did not. The game was close with the Phils ahead 2-0 at the start of the 6th inning. But Pence led off for the Phillies with a home run followed by four base hits as the visitors batted around scoring 3 runs for the final 5-0 score. Oswalt pitched 8 shutout innings for first place Philadelphia, scattering 8 hits and striking out 9, while Lannan took the loss for Washington.

Record Crowd
Combined with the July 30 Nationals game, the chapter raised $208 toward the IIE Mundel scholarship fund. Although we had a few more ticket requests after our reservation deadline, there were no more tickets available from the Nationals, as the ballpark was a complete sellout for this game which set a Nationals Park single game attendance record. I was fortunate to be among the first 15,000 fans entering the ball park who received an Ian Desmond bobblehead, so it wasn’t a total loss. I was also lucky to catch one of the NATS t-shirts thrown into the upper deck at the chapter’s July 30 ballgame outing.
