National Capital Chapter Garners IIE’s 2009 GOLD Award

Our IIE National Capital Chapter received the GOLD Award for the Chapter Activity Report (CAR) at the IIE Annual Conference Awards Banquet in Cancun Mexico on June 7. Chapter Treasurer, Neal Schmeidler – who was honored at the banquet as an IIE Fellow – along with the Chapter’s President, Russell Wooten and Secretary Joe Scheibeler accepted the award on behalf of the chapter. CAR consists of 5 categories on which chapters are judged.

  1. Chapter Planning – We received full credit (15 out of 15 possible points) by submitting the chapter’s Strategic Plan in January 2009, which was given the top rating by our Regional Vice President and the chapter had 11 Board meetings in 2009.
  2. Chapter Programs – We received 14 out of 20 possible points, with four point for an increase in non-member meeting attendance while losing five points on members’ attendance, but achieved 10 out of 11 points on the number of chapter meetings held (8) and the meeting quality as rated by attendees on evaluation forms.
  3. Membership Communication, Growth and Retention – We received 22 out of 25 possible points by receiving the top newsletter Platinum rating, linking the newsletter to the chapter website (www.IIENationalCapital.com), emailing the newsletter and chapter event announcements, linking our website to the national www.IIEnet2.org website, archiving newsletter issues on our website and holding joint meetings and special events such as two ballgame outings and a networking mixer.
  4. Student Outreach & Community Affairs – We earned 16 out of 20 possible points, including 5 out of 5 points for providing over $500 support to student scholarships. We also received full credit for supporting school science fairs, career fairs, participating in National Engineers Week including judging the student Future Cities competition, participating in the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies (DCCEAS), and affiliating with the Washington Academy of Sciences (WAS).
  5. Member/Chapter/Institute Support – We earned 16 out of 20 possible points in this category, by partnering with national to hold a seminar or workshop, participating in IIE sponsored events, a chapter member’s article in an IIE publication (e.g. IIE Solutions), participating in an IIE webinar, attending the IIE Annual Conference, and facilitating Neal Schmeidler’s nomination for the honor of IIE Fellow (which was awarded to Neal at the Annual Conference on June 7).

Mr. Wooten is holding the Chapter's Gold Award for chapter excellence.
