July 30 Scholarship Fundraiser: NATS Shut Out METS 3 – 0

On Jason Werth bobblehead night, he drove in all three Nationals’ runs with a first inning home run to beat the NY METS 3 – 0 on Saturday night July 30. The IIE National Capital Chapter sold 22 tickets for the NATS vs. NY METS game, raising $176 for the Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship fund and we’ll do it again on Saturday night, August 20 for the NATS vs. Philadelphia Phillies game. With over 35,000 in attendance, only those who arrived early enough were among the 15,000 to receive free bobbleheads. An even larger crown is expected for the first-place Phils on August 20, where free Ian Desmond bobbleheads will be given to the first 15,000 fans entering the ball park.

Yunesky Maya, a Cuban-born right hander, was called up from the NATS Syracuse AAA farm team on short notice to pitch for the Nationals in place of scheduled starter Jason Marquis, who was traded to Arizona before the trading deadline. Maya pitched a shutout into the sixth inning but strained his back running the bases earlier in the inning and the Nationals bullpen took over for a combined shutout and a save by Drew Storen, his 26th of the season. Following Rick Ankiel’s lead-off single and a two-out walk to Michael Morse, Werth blasted a 79-mph knuckleball from Mets starter R.A. Dickey about halfway up the grass embankment beyond the centerfield fence – over 400 feet. Werth ended up two-for-three plus an intentional walk on his bobblehead night. The METS loaded the bases with two out in the ninth inning before pinch hitter Willie Harris struck out looking on a Drew Storen slider.
